ECONOMIES.
IN* THE PUBIJC SERVICE. MR. MASSEY QUOTES FIGURES. Feilding, May 10. The economies effected by the Government in accordance with its declared policy were detailed by the Prime Minister at Feilding to-night. Mr. Massey gave the figures as follows, with brief explanations:— £ Total amount saved as result of first cut in cost of living increase for January, February. and March, 1922 177,234 Equivalent to an annual saving of 752,936 Savings resulting from economies effected during year 1921-22. ineluding reduction of staff 912,554 Butter and flour subsidies discontinued 1,000,000 Total estimated annual saving from other economies now operating 889,112 Additional revenue accruing from economies effected or adjustments of method of collection 72,099 Savings in interest and sinking fund 766,900 Estimated annual saving by proposed second cut in salaries, etc, 646,000 Estimated annual saving by proposed third cut in salaries, etc. ..... ....... 430,000 Total Increased charges had, however, to be met on account of:— Interest and sinking fund . . 610,085 Scale increases to classified salaries .......226,443 Total £837,128
