EMBEZZLED FUNDS.

GAMBLED MONEY AWAY. THE SENTENCE ON ARBUCKLE. By Telegraph.—Press Association Wellington, Last Night. At the criminal sessions oi the Supreme Court to-day, John Arbuckle was sentenced to four years’ reformative detention -for embezzling the Miners’ Federation funds. In sentencing Arbuckle, the Judge said the sentence might be revised by the Prison Board, upon his convincing the board that none of the £2OOO was stowed away. Giving such information might lead to the board recoverrng some portion of the money gambled away. Arbuckle pleaded tha€ he drew insufficient remuneration. He had to pay £3 10s weekly in expenses and travelling and 10s fortnightly in dues, leaving an insufficient balance to maintain his wife and children. Hoping to retrieve his position he used the first £lOO for gambling, but he got deeper in and finally irretrievably so, and lost.

The jury, in finding their verdict, attached a rider severely condemning the Miners’ Union officials for lax and careless methods in keeping accounts and handling money.
