REPARATIONS.
THE TOTAL FROM GERMANY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received May 12, 5.5 p.m. London, May 11. The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Robert Horne), replying to a question in the House of Commons, said the German payments in cash and kind to the British Empire and the Allies from the Armistice to December 21 last, including the money for the armies of occupation. reimbursements, advances, and coal deliveries, were estimated a® 6,487,856,000 gold marks.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Paris, May 11. The German Government, replying to the last note of the Reparation Commission, declares, firstly, that it is convinced of the necessity to cover all the State’s outgoings from taxation and internal loans not involving monetary inflation, nevertheless, in view of the economic situation, Germany cannot discharge the debits payable in foreign currencies without foreign loans. It is impossible to comply with the Commission’s demand to impose new taxation and raise the equivalent of 50 million sterling before May 31. Germany is prepared before that date to submit to the commission a complete scheme for the purpose of giving effect to this principle. Secondly, Germany is prepared to afford the Reparations Commission all facilities for the investigation of German financial conditions and to consult the commission regarding the necessary financial legislation.
