The liner City of Winchester arrived in the stream from Oamaru at 1.30 p.m. yesterday, and was brought alongsi le by the harbormaster (Captain Wim. Waller) an hour laW. The vessel was drawing 19 feet fore and 19ft. Sin. aft. Her length is 465 feet, i:nd Captain Hoppins is in command. Loading operations were commenced yesterday afternoon.
NGAHERE BRINGS COAL. The Ngahere arrived early yesterday morning from Greymouth with 450 ions of coal. Discharging operations were continued throughout the day, and the vessel sailed last night for Wanganui to discharge the balance of her cargo. THE RARAWA. The Rarawa brought passengers and 170 tons of cargo from Onehunga yesterday morning and sailed north again at 8.30 last n’ght. NGAKUTA THIS MORNING. Laden with 580 tons of general cargo, -.he Ngakuta is due at New Plymouth ’his morning from Lyttelton. It is hoped to dispatch the vessel for Greymouth late to-night. MAKALLA DUE TUESDAY. The Makalla is expected to leave Wellington for New Plymouth on Monday afternoon, and should reach this port on Tuesday io discharge the balance if ) or cargo. Later the Makalla will common-e Homeward leading at Nelson and Wanganui, going then to Sydney to complete. The steamer Makalla is one of the 30 vessels owned by the Brocklebank Line, of Liverpool. She is one of the two steamers of that line used as training ships for cadets. She has 34 cadets on board, and they do all the work on. deck usually done by seamen. Besides the master and officers, the vessel carries a bos’un and bos’un's mate, who train the cadets in seamanship, and also an instructor, who teaches navigation. The firemen and stewards are Hindus. The boys join at 16, and after fmrr years’ sea training are eligible to be examined for a second mate’s certificate. If successful they are appointed as a junior officer in the line. The Brocklebank steamers are Indian traders, and usually run between England and Calcutta. Captain T. A. Tyson is in command. PORT CHALMERS ANNOUNCED. The C. and D. liner Port Chalmers is announced to load for Home at New Plymouth about the middle of July. From this port she will take about 17,000 freight carcases.
KAHIKA’S NEXT TRIF. The Kahika leaves Duivjd’n cr. Wednesday for New Plymouth, via wav ports. NEW CUN ARD LINERS. Two “Port” steamers were launched in England during March for tie CUnard Line (says a Sydney cable). It Is proposed to increase the services from Londoi and New York to Australia with rogu’nr fortnightly sailings. THE RE-FLOATED VALMAIBE. The schooner Vnlmarie arri/°d at Wellington yesterday morning and was berthed later at the wharf. Last month about 50,000 feet of timber was discharged, when it was" found that the vessel was commencing to clear herself. A strong current nad started to shift the sand In which she was embedded, and, by means of pumps and strong tackle, the vessel was righted after a week’s work and pulled out of the hole in which site rested. Last Sunday she floated, and a tug was sent for. The Valmarie looks somewhat knocked abotft, but her hull Is sound. OVERSEA MOVEMENTS. London, May 11.—Arrived: At Boston. Canadian Cruiser; at Suez,.
