TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Ashburton races to-day. Wanganui Steeples on Thursday. Wdmnoko will be “bard” in the Century Hurdles. The going at Hawera did not suit Some Red. Omahu should take some settling in the Wanganui Steeples. The much-boomed Te Maire has a lot to learn about steepleckasing. The Bar Vons have worn a worried loor since Irapuka paid that dividend on WednesMangamahoe appeared to be unluckj- on the second day at Hawera, and may be worth watching in the Connolly Handicap. Before leaving home Mattock gave a finished display over big fences, but at Hawera he shaped like a “finished” racer. “Paddy” Scally has a good sort of a three-year-old in *sen Nevis, by Mountain Knight, out of that fine mare Iramer. Ben Nevis should win a lot of races. They say that the Absurds cannot stay, but Wamba won the Manawapou Hurdles so easily on Thursday that distance may not trouble him. Grotesque, who won over a mile and a quarter recently, is another that may upset the fallacy. What with one thing and another the connections of Passin' Through have had a lot to put up with lately, and most people were pleased to see the Guianforte gelding score at Hawera. If be goes on the right way he siwuld turn out a top-hole hurdler.
Rational ran two fine races at Hawera, hut had to be bustled too much In the early stages on the first day to have a chance of heading off Irapuka at the finish. However, he won nicely on Thursday. It was up to’ him, anyhow. Royal Fancy is, I believe, trie first of the successful Bernard breed to race in the Dominion, and on her running in The Shorts on Thursday she proved herself to be very sonart. Another imported one, Creme de Menthei - broke it for a win in the above mentioned race, and returned a nice double-figure dividend. Albert Jackson’s luck has been out for a long time, and the win was very popular in Wanganui. Mr. J. Bull “mixes it” with his team, racing them on the flat, over hurdles, and over country, as his judgment directs, and possibly the fact that Omahu was kept at the tapping game all last season led punters to overlook the Maniapoto gelding in the McRae Memorial Handicap on Wednesday. When the Hunterville sportsman “sets” a horse for a race he generally collects. Kato was the surprise packet amongst the 'chasers at Hawera, and won in fine style each day, incidentally returning a brace of remunerative dividends. With 11.7 he is not overweighted in the Hack Steeples at Wanganui. In Palmerston on Thursday they reckoned that Santiago could not lose the Borough ■ Hack Handicap, and many punters from down that way turned a bad meeting into a winning one by sharing in the great dividend the San Fran filly returned when she ran home in second place. It would have been a royaler if it had landed, but we have to be thankful for what the gods send us The Auckland division was a strong one at Hawera, and two firsts, two seconds and a third came their way. With any luck they ■ might have done better. Crossfire continues to run consistently, and the dividend sle returned in the Borough Hack Handicap must have hurt some of th* layers in the money-basket. It was a. false “price,” which ever way you consider it. Kinsem will take some beating in the Borough Handicap at Wanganui with 9st, and ' Sunny Corner (7.11) also reads well. It is hardly likely that Rational will be asked to • line up with the steadier of 10.4. Koura is mentioned as an unlikely starter in the Wanganui Steeples. “Too much weight,” her owner says, but. we imagine that he has got his eye on something else for k the daughter o£ Salwadaa l
