EGMONT WINTER MEETING. THE CONCLUDING DAY. INCOME WINS THE BIG RACE, , Si The Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting was concluded yesterday In fine weather, and there was a large attendance, the gate takings being about £lOO in excess of those for the second day last year. Fields were again large, and the racing good, finishes being close and exciting. The public had a better day than on Wednesday, three favorites wlnThe totallsator again had a comparatively busy day, handling £25,008, as compared with £34,720 for the same day at last winter meeting, a decrease of £9712. The total for the meeting was £49,646, as compared with £69,158 for the two days last year, a decrease of £19,512. This is less than was generally anticipated. The Davidson Memorial, the principal flat race, was won by the New Plymouth-owned Income, whilst Rational won the open sprint. The New Plymouth-trained Kato scored in the Opeke Steeples, being the only double winner at the meeting. Wamba showed considerable improvement on his previous day’s running, and won the hurdles in good style. Tenacious, Te Maire and Polthogue fell in the steeples, but neither the jockeys nor the horses were injured. After the conclusion of the hurdles an enquiry was held into the running of Volo, but after hearing evidence the judicial committee, while expressing themselves as not being entirely satisfied, decided that the evidence did not warrant any action being As on the first day, the conduct of the meeting was good. The course was in splendid order, the races were got off well to time, and the officials all did their duty well. The Hawera Band again provided a programme of music that was much appreciated. Ben Nevis was made a better favorite than Go’d Star, the pair carrying more than half the machine. Creme de Menthe was quickest out, and led along the back from Gold Star, with Otapawa and Ben Nevis next. Gold Star took the lead at the turn, and, going on, won nicely by two lengths from Ben Nevis, with Creme de Menthe four lengths further back third and Some Red fourth. Time, Imin 18sec.

Master Boris was the only defection, leaving nine to face the barrier. Of these Wamba was made a warm order, with Simonides and Passin’ Through solidly supported. Passin’ Through was quickest over the first obstacle, with Volo and Wamba next. After a couple of furlongs Wamba went to the front and showed the way past the stand from Halcyon, Passin’ Through, Volo and Mangawai. Along the back, Mangawai and Halcyon were running second, with Passin' Through third. At the bend Wamba was well clear, and though he lost ground at the last obstacle, went on to wfn comfortably by three lengths from Passin’ Through, who beat Naughty by a length for second place. Gladful was fourth. Time, 3min 23sec.

The nine carded were saddled up. Oakleigh was- sorted out as favorite, with Khartoum next in demand. Te Maire and Kato were quickest out, the latter being smarter over the first obstacle, and assuming command, with Te Maire and Master Boris together next, and General Raven fourth. Over the double jump the order was Kato, Te Maire, Master Boris, General Raven, Tenacious and Khartoum. There Was little alteration along the back, except that Khartoum was improving his position, and half a mile from home had run into third berth. At the turn Kato was half a dozen lengths clear of Khartoum, with Te Maire some distance back third, and the rest of the field bunched. In the run home Khartoum put in a strong claim, but Kato stalled him off and won by a length and a half, with General Raven about 100 yards away third and Master Boris fourth. Tenacious fell half a mile from home, whilst Te Maire and Polthogue came down at the last jump. Neither horses nor riders were injured. Time, 4min 9 3-ssec. Some Red was quickest out, but after the field had settled down Orchid, with Pouma, assumed command, and this pair, a. couple of furlongs from home, had a three lengths' break on Royal Fancy and a bunched field. Orchid and Pouma turned for home clear of the field, but in the run home were soon done with, and Creme de Menthe, coming very fast, passed the post two lengths in front of Royal Fancy, who was half a length in front of Cochineal, with Loved One fourth. The latter was first to break the line, but passing the post the first time White Blaze went to the front, and leaving the straight established a break of several lengths, with Correspondent, Voluble, Income and Tenterfield as his nearest attendants. Three furlongs from home the field closed on White Blaze, Income and Voluble taking the lead. This pair were on terms turning for home, but once straightened up Income had the advantage, and In a good finish won by three parts of a length from Equitable, who finished fast a similar distance in front of Mangamahoe. There were only two defections, leaving fourteen starters. In the heaviest betting race of the meeting Mort Avis was sorted out by the public, carrying half as much again as either Sussex or Blissfulness, the next in demand. Big Push led for three furlongs from Santiago and Blissfulness, hut a furlong later Sussex took command, whilst Crossfire had moved into fourth: position and was rapidly reducing the gap between the leaders. Santiago turned for home in front of Blissfulness and Crossfire, but in the run home the last-named overhauled the leader and won by a length, with Mort Avis half a length further back and Price close up fourth.
