BOROUGH EMPLOYEES’ WAGES. REDUCTIONS AND INCREASES. The Borough Council, at its meeting last night, deliberated long in committee on the wages question as affecting the borough staff, and at about midnight it was reported that the following resolutions had been carried in connection with the finance committee’s recommendations. That the borough workmen’s wages

GENERAL ITEMS. The Minister of Justice notified last night’s meeting of the Borough Council that the department is unable to increase the number of police in Stratford at present so as to enable a constable to be on duty all night. Sufficient recruits were available, but the funds at the disposal of the department were limited. The Mayor said this was very unsatisfactory. On the motion of Cr. Lawson it was decided, that, failing the appointment of another policeman, the Minister be asked to rearrange the shift to allow of an all night patrol. “A great many ‘spongers’ come to us for help,” said the chairman at this morning’s meeting of the Hospital Board. He was sorry to say that some of them were returned soldiers, or professed to be. They seemed to have the idea that Stratford was a soft place to come to, and he had had to hunt many away.

Discussing a case of charitable aid at the Hospital Board meeting this morning, Mr. Sole said the old man in question could not be admitted to the Old People’s Home at New Plymouth. The time was probably coming when the board would have to erect a cottage where such old people could go and look after themselves.

At last night’s meeting of the Taranaki Referees’ Association (central division) it was decided to send a request to the sergeant of police, Stratford, asking that a constable be appointed for duty at the A. and P. grounds during -football matches on Saturdays and Thursdays.
