PERSONAL.

Mr. C. H. Wynyard was last night appointed secretary of the Taranaki Boxing Association out of 20 applicants for the position. An old resident of Auckland, Mr. William Easdown, died on Saturday at his late residence, Kipling Avenue, Epsom. He was bom in Kent, England, in 1840, and came to New Zealand in 1862.

The death took place of Mr. Robert J. Paul, of Carterton, after a serious operation. The deceased was formerly in business in Hawera. He leaves a wife ahd several children.

Mr, W. H. Freeman, Clerk of Court, Hawera, has resigned from the Justice Department in order to join Messrs. O’Dea and Bayley, solicitors, Hawera. Mr. Freeman will be in charge of the branch to be opened by the firm in New Plymouth.

Mr. P. F. Fredric has resigned the position of organist and choirmaster at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, New Plymouth, which position he lias held for the past five years. At his closing service Mr. Fredric was the recipient of a handsome umbrella stand from the members of the choir, in recognition of his work.

The names of several gentlemen have been mentioned as possible candidates for the Patea seat, in the Liberal interest at the next election. They included Mr. W. Morrison, who has already twice contested the seat, Mr. Collins (chairman of the Wanganui Education Board), Mr. A. T. Christensen (chairman of the Patea Harbor Hoard) and Mr. J. R. Corrigan (chairman of the Hawera Dairy Company). Another of the fast-diminishing band of Auckland’s pioneers, in the person of Mr. James Braid Hay, aged 82 years, passed away on Saturday at the home of his son. The deceased was 'born in Wellington in 1840. He took part in the Maori war in the Waikato, being promoted to the rank of eaptain in the Transport Corps on account of his knowledge of the Maori language.

The death occurred at Masterton on Sunday, after a long illness, of a wellknown resident of that town in the person of Mr. Arthur James Purvis Hathaway, aged 74 years. Deceased was the eldeet son of the late Judge Hathaway, of Madras Presidency. He was born in Trichinopoly in 1848, and when five years of age was taken to England and educated at Harrow. He came out to New Zealand in 1865 to Marlborough, where he resided until 1870, when he went to Masterton, where he had lived practically ever since. “It is my sad duty to have to report the death of Mr. James Watson, on April 21, from injuries received at the quarry on the night previous to that date,” stated the monthly report of the New Plymouth Harbour Board’s resident engineer (Mr. G. W. B. Lowson). “The deceased was a most popular and energetic servant of the board, and his loss is keenly felt by all those associated with him in his duties upon the board’s works.’-

Miss Rosina Buckman, the talented soprano, who during the past ten years has risen to be called “England’s greatest operatic soprano,” will arrive at Wellington, with her husband, Mr. Maurice D’Oialey, by the lonic, on Monday next. The musical societies of Wellington have approached the Mayor, with the request that it would only be a fitting honor to accord a civic reception ,to a New Zea-land-born artist who has achieved such distinction in the sphere of grand opera., and he has consented to do so. The Prime Minister (Right Hon. W. F. Massey), the Treader of the Opposition (Mr. T- M. Wilford), and Sir Joseph Ward will also be on the platform to welcome the singer home.
