USAGE OF N.Z. BUTTER.
TO CONDITION ARGENTINE STOCKS
Some remarkable statements concerning the disposal of New Zealand butter at Home last year were made at the annual meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce after the adoption of the annual report and balance had been proposed and seconded. Mr. Stuart Wilson disagreed with the president’s remarks that the Governments interference in trade in trying to improve the economic position was doomed to failure. The chairman said the partnership with the Government Was a bad one, but how were they going to remedy it. The speaker was in London last August, and the London ring was buying New Zealand lamb for 3d a lb. and selling it for Is 9d. They could not buy butter in London or in England under the New Zealand name. It was sold as Danish butter. Huge quantities of New Zealand butter were used to recondition butter from the Argentine and other places and then sold, as New Zealand butter. A voice: Where?
Mr. Wilson said it was sent to Devonshire, and there sold as Devonshire butter.
