SCHOOL SWIMMING.
CERTIFICATES GAINED. THE CENTRAL PUPILS. Swimming certificates gained by pupils of the Central School were presented at a function which took place at the school yesterday afternoon prior to the “break-up” for the holidays. Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., chairman, of the school committee, presided. Congratulations to the winners of awards were extended by Mr. A. R. Standish, president of the North Taranaki head centre of the Life Saving Society, and the prizes were presented by Mrs. Standish. The headmaster (Mr. H.,A. Stratford) referred to the hard work done by those who enterd for the life-saving awards, and said they had to be congratulated, not only on upholding their own credit, but also in upholding the honor of the school.
Mr. P. A. Mathieson, custodian of the baths, said praise was due, not only to those who gained certificates, but also to the pupils who tried and failed. He used to think that the West End school •held the swimming honors, but this year Central had come out on top. Mr. Mathieson urged the pupils to make greater efforts next year, and he said they were lucky in having a sympathetic headmaster and an enthusiast in Mr. Coleman. Before the gathering dispersed, a heart' - vote of appreciation was accorded the visitors on the call of Mr. Stratford. DISTANCE SWIMMING. Boys.
