Mr. Chamberlain stated in the House of Commons that Britain had declined to admit any obligation to w-mpenaato Russia for the damage caused there by Allied troops after the armistice. At a sale of the late Baroness Bur-dett-Coutts’ pictures Heppner’s P of the ysmnger Pitt, painted m IWJ, brought seven thousand guineas. Another Hoppner brought eighteen hundred guineas. Abbot’s portrait of Lord Nelson was sold for eleven hundred guineas and Raeburn’s portrait of bit Walter Seott found a buyer at 9200 guineas.
