At the wool sales there was strong general competition for ail qualities at full opening rates, with a tendency in sellers’ favour. Tallow. —One thousand six hundred and seventy-nine casks were offered and 445 sold at par to 6d decline. Mutton, fine 41s 6d, medium 37s 6d; beef, fine 42s 6d, medium 36s Gd. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Melbourne, May 5. Barley.—English 4s, Cape 2s lid. Oats, 3s 4d to 3s 6d. Potatoes, £4 5s to £4 15s. Onions, £4 15s to £5. i ALBURY WOOL SALES. Sydney, May 5. The wool sales at Albury were the oiost successful ever held locally. The bulk was bought ou Yorkshire account. Four thousand bales were offered and prices were on a par with other centres. Top-making sorts were dearer. THE POULTRY MARKET. Messrs. Webster Bros, report: Cockerels 2s 2d, ducks 2s 3d. Messrs. L. A. Notan and Co. report: Cockerels 2s, 2s 3d, pullets 7s to 10s, small 3s 3d to 4s 9d, hens Is 9d to 3s 6d, ducks 3s Id to 3s lid. THE PIG MARKET. At Newton King, lAd.’s New Plymouth haymarket yesterday there was a fair yarding of pigs. Wfcaiiere made 5s to 6s 6(L slips 12s, stores 19s 6d to 335. ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET. Christchurch, May 3. At Addington market there were heavy yerettngs of all sections of stock, particularly fat sheep. An improved market operated for prime beef and store sheep, whilst butchers’ mutton maintained last, week’s sales. Fat lambs were easier. Store Steep—A big yarding for this time of the year. A better class of ewes came forward, and, with wethers, sold freely. Forward lambs 15s 6d to 17s, good 13s 6d to 15s 3d, medium Ils to 13s 3d, small 9s to 10s Bd, cull 6s to 83 9d, good halfbred ewe lambs 198. good 4 and 6-tootb ewed 20s Bd, good 4 and 6-tooth ewes 20s Bd, good 4 and 6-tooth hattbred 22s 6d to 24s Sd, ordinary 4,6, and 8-tooth 14s 9d to 18s, inferior and low-conditioned 12s to 14s, sound and failing mouthed 13s to 16s, good forward 4 and 6-tcoth wethers 18s to 21s 7d, ordinary 12s Gd to 17s 6d, 6 and 8-tooth 15s Gd to 17s, forward 2-tooth 17s 2d, ordinary 13s to 15s 3d. Fat Lambs—A yarding Of 6430, compared with 6800 last week. The bulk were only
moderately finished. There was a weakening throughout, values averaging about 8d per lb. Extra prime lambs 25s 6d to 31s 3d, prime 22s 6d to 25s 3d, medium 19s 9d to 22s 3d, light and inferior 16s to 19s 6d. Fat Sheep.—An exceptionally heavy yarding. Values for. good flnutton maintained until near the finish, when prices slipped back, but light mutton was weaker. Freezers secured the bulk of this. Extra prime wethers 2«s to 32s 3d, prime 23s to 26s 6d, medium 20s to 22s 9d, light 16s 6<i to 19s 9d, extra prime ewes 23s 6d to 275, prime l»s 6d to 23s 3d, medium 1 5s to 19s, lighter Ils 6d to 14s 6d, old and Inferior 8s to 10s 6d. Fat Cattle.—Values for prime were up l»s per head: secondary were unaltered. Extra prime steers £l4 10s to £l6 15s, prime £lO 10s to £l4 ss, medium £7 12s 6d to £lO ss, light and inferior £4 15s to £7 ss, extra prime heifers £8 10s to £l3 15s, prime £6 to £8 ss, ordinary £4 10s to £5 15s, prime cows £5 to £7 12s 6d, ordinary £3 5s to £4 15s. Veal era.—Good calves sold well, but not up to last week’s rates. Runners £4 16b, good vealers £3 5s to £4 ss, medium £1 10s to £2, small calves 4s upwards. Store Cattle.—A large entry and a much better sale. Four-ye&r steers £7 18, ttreeyear £4 12s 6d to £5, two-year £2 10s to £3, yearling £1 5s to £1 12s, two-year heifers £5 Gs, 18-months £4 15a, small £2 18s to £3 ss. Dairy Cattle. —Cows just calved, or about to calve, were In demand. Extra good second and third calvers £l4 to £lB 10s, good £8 10s to £l3, good springing heifers £8 to £l4 10s, cows just calved or about to calve £8 to £l3, aged and Inferior cows 15s to £4 10s. Fat Pigs.—A large entry met Irregular sale. Choppers £1 10s to £5 14s, light baconers £3 10s to £4, heavy £4 5s to £5, ex‘Ta heavy £5 Is, average price per lb 6’4 d to 7d, light porkers 45s to 50s, heavy 52s 6d to 675, average price per lb 8d to 9d. Store Pigs.—Medium stores £1 12s to £1 18s, small 16s to £1 10s, weaners 7s to 9s.
