RACECOURSE SWEEPSTAKES.

AN ILLEGAL PROCEEDING. WARNING TO THE PUBLIC. By Telsyraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. When three young men pleaded guilty at the Police Court to-day to having conducted a sweepstake on the Mangere Handicap, a solicitor said his client only deducted 2s 6d for himself from the stakes, the balance going to the winner of the sweep. ‘lt is still a matter very frequently indulged in on racecourses, but it is against the law, and people must be made to know,-’ said Mr. Poynton, S.M. Chief-Detective McHveney: “The penalty is up to £2OO. Some people go from racecourse to racecourse and make a good thing out of it. Advertisements are put in papers by racing clubs stating that this sort of thing is not allowed, and those offenders will be put off the course and prosecuted, so these people know the risk they run.” Mr. Poynton: “They should all know the risk they run. Some day an offender will be fined the full penalty of £2OO. People must remember that this is against the law, and if they break the Jaw in small things unchecked, they will be liable to defy it in bigger things.” Each defendant was fined £3.
