SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At the monthly meeting of the Stratford School Committee the headmaster (Mr. L. J. Furrie) reported that the average attendance had been as follows: Week ending April 7, 610.2; April 14, 57'1.8 (one wet day); April 21, 586.6 (one very wet day); April 28, 615.1. The report proceeded: “The need for more amusements for the younger children is evident. We have over 600 children —nearly 200 primer children — and two swings and one horizontal bar. Such things as see-saws, slides, sandpit, etc., would help to brighten up the little ones in play hours. I hope the committee will not lose sight of the needs of the primary scholars, es--1 pecially the younger ones in the preparatory department.- The bigger ones are fairly well catered for at present in the games organisation. The extended lunch hour is working well, and is a decided benefit to the great majority. The needs of the country scholars have been arranged for.” The chairman drew attention to the improvement in the average attendance. An attendance of 615 out of 647 was very fair. It was very satisfactory to see the attendance keeping up. As to amusements for the younger children, a committee should be set up to report to next meeting. The committee then sat as the Advisory Committee of the Technical High School, The director (Mr. A. H. Amess) reported that the roll number was 184. Pupils of the school won six of the seven prizes given for cowjudging at the New Plymouth show. The work of providing playing areas will be put in hand immediately. The chairman said the attendance was very satisfactory. A big feature was the dairy work. Pupils were getting sound education in that direction.
