WAR IN CHINA.
AN INTENSE STRUGGLE, SWEEPING ADVANCE. j FIGHTING DEVELOPS, By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received May 4, 8.30 p.m. Pekin, May 3. The struggle at Changsintien and Pukouchow was resumed with increased intensity this morning. The battle, towards noon, went in favor of the Fengtien forces, who, after heavy rifle, machine-gun and some artillery preparation, swept across the plain beyond Changsintien, driving their opponents back a distance of eight li and capturing many. Prior to the battle there was a small panic at Changsintien as the result of an aeroplane bombing the stations. A telegram from Tientsin reports that large-scale operations between General Wu x'ei Fu and General Chang Tso Lin have started, the former resuming the initiative following Monday’s setback. A battle is imminent near Machang.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Asen. CHARGE AGAINST JAPAN, INFRINGEMENT OF NEUTRALITY. Received May 4, 7.45 p.m. Pekin, May 3. The military governor of Shantung lias telegraphed the Government that the Fengtien forces are being transferred to Darien, via the South Manchuria railway, which is controlled by the Japanese, for shipment to Shantung. The report is vigorously denied by the Japanese legation.—-Aus.-N.Z. Cable PEI FIT’S DEATH REPORTED. Peking, May 3. Chang Tso Lin’s headquarters announce that Pei Fu has been killed ,in action. The Foreign Legations are investigating the statement, which is not confirmed.
