THE RAILWAYS.
CHANGES IN THE POLICY. BIG IMPROVEMENT EXPECTED. STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. (By Wire —Own Correspondent.) Wellington, Last Night. The Prime Minister said to-day that he had been daily in consultation with the acting-Minister for Railways (Hon. D. H. Guthrie) with regard to the promised improvements in the railways. Various suggested methods of improvement had been fully discussed, and Mr. Guthrie was constantly going into various aspects of the matter with the general manager (Mr. McVilly). Mr. Massey stated that he felt sure that the proposals at present in view, if put into effect, would secure a substantial improvement. The management would then have much better facilities for dealing expeditiously and satisfactorily with important problems in connection with the running of the railways. He could not say yet what form the improvements would take, but he made it clear that there was no truth whatever in the statements that the delay was due to a hitch in the discussions between the Government and the general manager. “I have every reason to believe,” said Mr. Massey, “that the ideas, when thoroughly matured, will be in the best interests of the users of the railways, the Government and departmental officers concerned. I anticipate that it will be possible to arrive at a definite decision as to what is the best course to take in the very near future.”
