TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) The Marlborough Racing Club’s autumn meeting, which takes place on Friday and Saturday, is the only excitement in the sporting world this week. Acceptances for the first day are a bit above the average, and, judging by prices ruling in the Empire City, Matatua is likely to start a good favorite in the Waterlea Cup, while Waimatao, Capping Day and are in the boom for the Autumn ’/print. Now that Egmont has donned its snowy mantle one is reminded that the jumping season is at hand, and perusal of the entries for the Auckland (Great Northerns), Wanganui and Egmont meetings gives one the idea that this winter will be a notable one as far as timbertoppers are concerned. AU the old, or tried, brigade are out, notably Coalition, Lochella, Coroglen, First Line, Waimai, Sir Solo, Foeman. Explorer, No Surrender, Omahu, Ngata, Maniahera, Alteration, Gladful and the rest, while the list of new aspirants is also a promising one. Possibly Coalition will again he the shining light over the big fences, but Coroglen, Explorer, Luperino, Khartoum and Te Maire are expected to get amongst the flrstfiighters in the steeplechase ranks. Alteration and Explorer should pay their way in the principal hurdle events, and Volo, Simonides, Poanui and Maniahera will also be heard of.
Wanganui nominations are good all round. The Wanganui Steeplechase has attracted 23 horses, including three previous winners—Coalition, First Line and Foeman. Sixteen figure in the Century Hurdles, but Ngata, who scored last year, is a notable absentee. The Connollv Handicap has drawn twenty-three, including Marqueteur, Bonnetter, Tame Fox, Printemps, Tenterfleld and Punka. Taranaki stables are strongly represented in all events.
Mr. G. D. Beatson secured Feramorz very cheaply the other day, the price being only 50 guineas. Later in the day two substantial advances were refused for the imported horse. It is wonderful how cheaply good stallions may be purchased at times in the Dominion. Mr. Percy Johnson secured Hallowmas for 150 guineas, and Panmure failed tn elicit a bid when put up to auction recently. All three horses have sired winners, and their earnings
in stud fees would be more certain and substantial than those of the average, expensive back racer. Detroit was nominated for the principal flat races at Wanganui, but his leg filled after galloping on Saturday, and he was withdrawn on Monday morning. Mr. E. Penman shifts his team (Detroit, Adrina, Complimentary and Jasper Gate) to Otaki next week, where he has erected a good house (named Detroit Lodge), horse boxes, feed rooms, etc. It is unfortunate to lose the services of the stable’s most consistent stake-earner at this time of the year, but “Ted” is a good man with “cripples”, and he hopes to get the veteran Detroit on his feet again shortly. Of the others, Complimentary (Gazeley—Compliment) and Adrina (Advance —Miss Terina) show most promise. Jasper Gate, by Marble Arch, is unsound. As an example of what some owners think of a handicapper's adjustments, it may be mentioned that H. Hickey, to secure the services of R. Reed, put up 191bs overweight on Correspondent in the Autumn Handicap at Hastings. Correspondent won It was a sultry, hot day at the races, but Hennre arrived on the course clad in a heavy, ’rubber coat, and was perspiring freely. “PT corry,” remarked Hurt, “you te fresh fella, Henare, or te cold, eh?” ‘‘Not too much te fresh,” replied Henare, “or te cold, either, but, by cripes, te coat he hide te hole in te pants, isn’t it?” Trainer “Tommy” Lloyd is at present an inmate of the Palmerston hospital, and his condition is considered precarious.
