AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE.
ADMIRAL’S CRITICISM RESENTED. By Telegraph.—Press Asen.—Copyright. Sydney, May 2. Mr. Hughes, while agreeing with much of Admiral Dumaresq’s observations, -considers his remarks are in bad taste and that any such criticism should come from the Naval Board, which advises the Government. The remarks are a reflection on Admiral Dumaresq’s superior officer, Admiral Everett, who was directly recommended by Lord Beatty. Respecting the statement that Australia had not paid the same amount per heaxl of population on the navy as England, Mr. Hughes said the statement was gratuitous and uncalled for, and improper. Australia’s naval expenditure had been greater than that of all the other Dominions put together.
