DOMINION BUTTER.

POPULARITY IN BRITAIN CAMPAIGN BY MERCHANTS. The campaign to popularise New Zealand butter at Home, inaugurated by prominent Tooley Street butter merchants early this year, is being carried on through the press of Great Britain. Exchanges to hand show that the campaign is chiefly directed to emphasising the cheapness of the Dominion product compared with foreign butter, but stress is also laid on the high quality of New Zealand butter, which, it is stated, is quite equal to Danish. It is also noted that tne large increase in production in the Dominion will ensure a regular supply within the Empire at prices considerably lower than have been demanded for the foreign commodity. Publicity is also being given to a statement by the High Commissioner in London, Sir James Allen, detailing the methods - o-r nroduetion and the system of Government grading of dairy products by ex'perts- The High Commissioner also 'mentions the fact that a great number of ex-service men have taken up dairyfarming, and feel a natural pride that the Motherland is consuming their produce in preference to that of the foreigner. . It is interesting to note that since February, when the campaign was launched, the price of New Zealand butter on the London market has shown a marked advance. The quotations in February . were 135 s to 140 s per cwt., compared with 188 s to 190 s on April 1. The quotations on April 13 were slightly lower than at the beginning of the month, viz., 178 s to l«2s. Experts in Auckland do not attribute the advance in prices entirely to the campaign by the merchants, but agree that it must be having a beneficial effect.. It is also urged that in addition to any immediate effect on the market, the campaign is likely to be permanently beneficial, owing to the fact that New Zealand butter is now reaching districts that previously were supplied almost exclusively with foreign butter.
