WAITARA.
RETURNED SOLDIERS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) April 27. The annual meeting of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was well attended. The Rev. G. H. Gavin presided. The balance sheet, which was adopted, showed that receipts (including £4 13s 5d brought forward), were £49 3s sd, and expenditure £39 4s 3d, leaving a credit 'balance of £9 19s 2d. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Rev. G. H. Gavin; vicepresidents, Messrs. C. H. Tate and W. T. JoU; auditor, Mr. C. H. Tate; committee, Messrs. R. Kirby, E. L. Clare, P. Peek, A. Jones, R. Pennington; secretary and treasurer, Mr. H. E. Brabant; delegate to conference, Mr. H. E. Brabant. The same subscription as last year, viz., 10s, was adopted. A resolution in favor of incapacitated men attending medical boards being granted a first-class pass on the railways was carried. This was a proposal from the Dominion executive. The annual .ball was left in a committee’s hands to arrange. HARBOR BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Hanbor Board was held on Friday last. The board’s solicitors wrote, informing the board of the necessary procedure where tenants fail to clear noxious weeds from the leased properties of the board. The board decided to take ac tion where lessees fail to clear the land as demanded by the board. As this was the last meeting before the annual election of chairman, Mr. Hine took the opportunity of thanking 111 ■ members for the support accorded him. There had been differences of opinion, but he thought the sole aim of the board had been to protect the interests of the public, and he was glad to say •that they respected each other’s opinions in all their discussions. Members expressed their appreciation of their chairman’s able control of the board’s business. I GENERAL. -x poll in connection with the Clifton County proposal to raise a loan of £1.5,000 for bridges takes place on May 8. The Chamber of Commerce is again in communication with the Minister of Railways relative to speeding up the forwarding of goods arriving at the port of New Plymouth. The Waitara school children celebrated Anzac Day at the school on Monday afternoon. The proceedings opened with the National Anthem. Addresses were given by the local ministers and Mr. Swinburne, the headmaster Choruses were given by the children, who sang "Anzac,” and "God Defend New Zea-i land.” Appropriate recitations were rendered by Keith Jones and Iris Kettle. The singing of/ Rule Britannia” brought the ceremony to a- close. On Tuesday an Anzac service WA.s held in the Theatre Royal, which was packed. The chair was occupied by the Mayor. Addresses were given by the local ministers, and the band, played appropriate music.
The friends of Mr. J. Cain were grieved to hear of the sudden death of Iris w’ife, which occurred unexpectedly on Tuesday. Mr. Cain is left with three children. Heartfelt sympathy goes out to those left behind.
The annual meeting of parishioners of the parochial district of Waitara was •held in St. John’s Hall on Monday, April 24. The annual report of the churchwardens was received, and the balancesheet adopted, the latter showing a credit balance. The following officers were elected: —Parishioners’ warden, Mr. Redward; church committee, Messrs. Robinson. H. Joll, Wells, Jaggs, and Chadwick. The vicar nominated Mr. Stead as vicar’s warden. Thanks were expressed for the generous assistance rendered by all who helped in the church’s Work during the past year.
