FIRES.
FOUR SHOPS DESTROYED. By Telegraph.—Press Association Palmerston N., April 27. The bige<st fire for twelve years occurred in Shannon early this morning, resulting in the. destruction of four snops: Burr, tobacconist and billiard room; Mrs. Coakley, tea rooms; Watterson, plumber; and Thwaites,- chemist. The premises of the Shannon Meat Company were saved with great difficulty. The fire raged for three hours. The insurances are reported to be very small. The buildings were owned by Messrs. Carter, Watterson. Gill and Roach. SUSPICIOUS OUTBREAKS. Wellington, April 27. . While the Wellington Rugby Union Management Committee was meeting last evening a fire broke out in the building in Woodward Street. The flames were quickly suppressed. This is the second fire in the same buildings within a few days. Another fire was discovered a little later in a elass room at the Wellesley Boys’ College on the Terrace, not far from Woodward Street. This also was suppressed before serious damage was done. The police regard the outbreak with suspicion, believing the origin to .be incendiary: possiibly one individual is responsible for all.
