SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
FRANKLEY. There was an attendance of about 20 , householders, Mr. A. P. Lister presiding. The chairman’s annual report re- • marked that it was satisfactory to note that the attendance at Frankley had improved during the year, being 72 and 49 at Westown. The report drew attention to the fact that nothing had been done regarding the acquisition of land which was under offer to the board. The committee commended the headmaster and staff and also the Westown side school on the very satisfactory results obtained during the year. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £26 10s 7d. In support of a circular received from the New Zealand Educational Institute the following resolution was carried: “That there is no desire on the part of this meeting for econ,my in educational reforms, where detrimental to the children’s welfare.” ■ Seven nominations were received for (the committee and as this was the number required, the following were duly elected,: —Messrs. F. W. Sutton, F. A. Lee, H. Kenny, E. Haskell, W. H. Haddrell, F. Dickenson, and J. Saggers. At a subsequent meeting of committee Mr. Lee was re-elected chairman and Mr. Dickenson was elected secretary. VOGELTOWN. There was a good attendance, Mr, W. Rumball presiding. The chairman of the committee (Mr V. Griffiths), in his annual report, expressed appreciation of the loyal support extended by parents, teachers and friends. The report dealt with the success of the school fete, by which £234 10s 5d had been raised for the improvement of the grounds. Part of the work had been completed. The school roll number was 134 and the average atI tendance had been excellent. Applicai tion had been made for additions to the I school, but owing to financial conditions the department placed the request on the waiting list. The Education Board, recognising the need for immediate relief, had secured the Methodist Sunday School, the infants taking possession early in February. While this relieved the congestion in the main school, it was trusted the arrangement would be of short duration only, as the best results could not be expected with the school divided into two sections so far apart. The headmaster and his capable etaff were again deserving of hearty congratulations. The credit balance in the ordinary account was £8 3s 7d, added to which there was a credit of £4B 15s in the fete account, and £l9 5s 9d subsidy, leas £2l 12s paid since for earthwork, etc., leaving an available balance of £55 3s sd, a most gratifying result.
As the required number of nominations were received no election for a committee was necessary. A resolution was passed heartily endorsing the action of the New Zealand Educational Institute in urging upon the Government the desirability of making adequate provision for the growing requirements of education throughout the Dominion. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the outgoing committee, appreciative reference being made to its work during the year. A similar compliment was paid to the headmaster and his staff. At a subsesuent meeting of the committee Mr. Griffiths was re-elected chairman and Mr. Allen secretary.
