TAX ON FOOD.
THE BURDEN IN BRITAIN. LABOR WANTS ABOLITION. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.--Copyright. Received April 27, 5.5 p.m. London, April 27. In consequence of the distress caused by the high taxation of foodstuffs many members of the House of Commons are inaugurating a campaign to reduce taxation. A prominent Labor member indicates that his party will go. further and fight for the total abolition of imposts on foodstuffs, notably the tea. and sugar duties. Lobbyists are of opinion that the Government will not dare to reduce the income tax without simultaneously taking threepence off tea and a penny off sugar, which, with a. shilling off the income tax, would cost £50,000,000.— Aus.-N.Z.
