DAIRY PRODUCE.

THE POOL PROPOSAL. ! MEETING AT DUNEDIN. j THE FEELING DIVIDED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. An extraordinary general meeting of the South Island Dairy Association was held this morning for the purpose of discussing the possibility of estabIT&iiing a compulsory pool to handle the whole of the export of butter and cheese. Mr. J. R. Thacker* occupied the chair, and there was a very large attendance of members of the association. The meeting, which was not open to the Press, lasted all day. Most of tlje argument revolved round the point whether the pool should be a Dominion pool or separate North and Soiyth Island pools. A motion was moved by Mr. Agar as follows: “That this meeting is of opinion that an improved system of marketing fs not only desirable, but necessary in the interests of the dairy producers, but is of opinion that a Dominion pool is undesirable, and that the interests of the South Island can be served best by a South Island pool for all dairy produce; and that we offer to co-operate with the North both here and in London, but insist upon retaining control of our produce.” Mr. Parker moved as an amendment:, “That in the opinion of this meeting a Dominion pool is a very desirable thing.” The mover said that his intention was that the scheme should be a compulsory scheme. On a ballot being taken the amendment was carried by 45 votes to 4-1. On the amendment being put as the motion another ballot was called for, and this resulted in the motion being lost by 45 votes to 44. The business was thus left in the air, so to speak.

Mr. Bowman then moved, and Mr. Agar seconded, that a committee of five be set up to meet delegates from the North Island and discuss all phases of the pool and report to the annual meeting of the association. The motion was carried.
