A SACRED CONCERT.

IN AID OF THE R.S.A. The Empire Theatre was crowded to the doors at the concert given last evening by the New Plymouth Choral Society in aid of the Returned Soldiers' Association. The programme had been arranged to suit a varied taste, and on very popular lines, excerpts from Handel’s “Messiah” oratorio being followed by light ballads and euphonium solos. Miss Harper was a new voice on a New Plymouth programme, and sang “Sunshine and Rain” in a very acceptable style, and. with good articulation and full round tone. To an encore to Tosti’s “Good-bye” Mrs. Ferry sang a beautiful little song, “Dream on, My Pretty Red Swan,” which was most effective. Mr. W. L. Hay also sang, and to an inevitable encore responded with carefully chosen numbers. Mr. B. Bellringer sang Elgar’s “Land of Hope and Glory,” with choral refrain. A cornet solo by Mr. R. Taylor and a euphonium solo by Mr. J. Lowe gave variety to the programme. The choir was responsible for three chorus items for the “Messiah” and “O Gladsome Light.” The proceeds of the concert should very materially assist the worthy object for which they are intended.
