SHEEP-DOG TRIALS.

THE TAH ATA GATHERING. A SUCCESSFUL MEETING. The fifteenth annual meeting of the Tarata Sheep Dog Trial Club was held on Thursday and Friday, on Mr. Peterson's property, which had been placed at the disposal of the club. The weather conditions on Friday were not conducive to good working, but the officials all did their part splendidly, and the events were run off well to time. A feature was the excellent catering by the ladies, who fully maintained Tarata’s reputation in this respect under very adverse circumstances. Mr. P. O. Shannessey as secretary had complete ai'rangements made. Mr. H. Lambert, as president, also rendered valuable assistance. Mr. W. B. Grant, of New Plymouth, made an excellent judge. Detailed results are :

HEAD, PULL, AND HOLD IN RING, about 300yds. First £6, second £2 10s, Third £l, fourth 10s. Points: Head 16, bring back 18, hold in ring 4, command 12, total 50. Rolfe’s Fly 15, 17, 3, 11, total 46; P. Lambert's Scott 15%, 16, 4,9, total 44%; S. George’s Hemp 16, 17, 1,9, total 43; J. Drummond’s Toss 14, 17, 2,9, total 42. Judge’s Remarks. Fly.—Went out fast, good line, fair head, in 55sec.; started a little rash, steadied up, pulled in good line into ring, holding fair—--46 points. Scott.—Went out fast, overran head slightly, Im. ssec.; lost time starting sheep, careless pulling, too much on right wing pulling, ring first attempt, dog out of position, and too much in ring holding—44% points.

Hemp.—Made good cast, good head, started sheep quietly, swinging sheep too much pulling a little rash past ring, failed to control sheep in ring—43 points.

Toss.—Came in on line, moved sheep before heading off line slightly to fence, to ring In fair line, ring first attempt, lost control of sheep at ring, time called—42 points.

HEAD, PULL, DRIVE AND YARD, about 300yds. Time 12 minutes. First £6, second £2 10s, third £l, fourth 10s. Points: Heading 11, bring back 10, drive 8, hurdles 3, work at yard 10, yarding 6, command 12, total 60.—Rolfe’s Fly 11, 10, 8,3, 8,6, 10, total 56; T. W. Waddell's Swift 11, 10, 6, 3,6, 0,9, total 45; S. George’s Hemp 11, 10, 6,2, 6,0, 8, total 44; J. Drummond’s Toss 10, id, 5,2, 7,0, 8, total 42.

Judge’s Remarks. Fly.—Went out in good cast fast, good head, started quietly good line to peg steady, through hurdles first attempt, good line to peg, let sheep out of position several times at yard, always making good recovery, only dog to yard—s 6 points.

Swift.—Good cast, good head, started sheep a little rash, otherwise pulled steady good line, through hurdles first attempt, overran head driving much too far in front of sheep, turned sheep back fair line to peg, failed to stand up to sheep, failed to yard—4s

Hemp.—Good cast, fast, good head fast, started quietly good line to peg steady, lost time getting through hurdles, fair line to peg, man doing too much work, failed to steady sheep at yard, failed, to yard—43 points.

Toss.—Fair cast, too straight, fair head, pulled steady good line to peg, lost time at hurdles, past hurdles, rung sheep, dog overrunning, head driving, let sheep away from yard, failed to yard—42 points.

LOCAL EVENTS, about 800yds. Ttane, 10 minutes. Points: Heading 18, bring back 16, command 12, style 6, yard 6, total 58. Rolfe’s Fly 16%, 15, 12, 5,6, total 54% ; H. Lambert’s Lammermon Tip 17, 16, 10, 3,5, total 51 ; J. Drummond's Toss 15, 15, 10, 4, 6, total 50; S. George’s Hamp 15, 14, 10, 4, 6, total 49.

Judge’s Remarks. Fiy.—-Went out fast, good line, headed a little close, a little rash at start but steadied up, good line to yard, yarded in good style—--54% points. Tip.— Slow to start up hill,' good line, good head, started quietly off line pulling on flat, brought back on to good line to yard, past yard, bad turn at yard, round yard, man came round gate before sheep were yarded—--51 points.

Toss.—Came in on line, recast headed too dose, started and pulled fair to flat, off line on flat, brought back to good positions a yard round yard several times, fair work at yard—so points.

Hemp.—ln on line reeast, took hill good line, stopped before heading, went too far up, started off line, pulling rash round yard several times before yarding—49 points.

HUNTAWAY, between 3 sets flags on zigzag course, about 300yds. Time, 10 minutes. First £4 10s, second £2, third £l, fourth 10s. Points: Huntaway 9, style 5, noise 9. command 12, total 35.—J. Hirst’s Ben 9,4, 9, 12, total 34; Sid. George's Jed 8, 4. 8, 11, total 31; M. O’Shannessey’s Black 5,4, 6,9, total 24. Judge's Remarks. Ben. —Hunted through all flags in good line and style, good noise, a bit slow all through the run—34 points. jed.—Through first flags good line, bad turn off second flags, fair line through second and third flags, fair noise, lost time going through third flag—3l points. Black. —Through first flags in good line and noise, just through second Hags, dog out of position, failed to reach third flags, split and lost sheep—24 points. SPECIAL PRIZES. Rolfe’s Fly won three special prizes, viz., P. H. Tocker’s Cup and £1 added for most, points in Class I, J. R. Corrigan's Cup and £1 added for most points in Class 11, and R. Masters,’ M.P. special of £1 Is for dog scoring most points In any two classes. J. Hirst’s Ben won W. Marshall’s special of £1 Is for local dog scoring most points in class
