N.S.W. DROUGHT.
WATER SHORTAGE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, April 22. The failure of summer to observe th* official dictum that it ends with March, and continued indications of further possible April records, are causing the water officials alarm. The unusually hot and droughty conditions of the last few weeks, and the continued influx of Easter visitors, resulted in heavy depletions. Failing rain, strict restrictions are expected. As the first step the water board will stop all extensions until the position improves. The return to droughty conditions has revived the proposal lor locking the Lachlan River, thereby freeing large areas of rich western lands from visitations of drought and opening the country to closer settlement. The scheme, which would involve millions, would water practically the whole Lachlan valley.
