ELTHAM.
A SAFE BURGLARY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) April 21. Burglars entered the butcher’s shop of Mr. A. F. Cuff at an early hour this morning, and removed the safe to a vacant section fifty yards to the rear of the shop. Their motive, no doubt, was to place it in some convenient place where it could be blown up and the contents removed. It is evident that the culprits were disturbed after their arduous task of removing the safe and lifting it up a bank, for it was discovered at 6 a.m. by Mr. Cuff’s employees unharmed, and cheques and cash to the amount of £l4O intact. The burglars participated in a supper on small goods before carrying out their work, but nothing else was touched. Some cash which was left on the office desk did not come under their notice. There is also evidence that the premises of Messrs. Judd and Holder, grocers, were tampered with this morning, a small window at the rear of their shop in Bridge Street having been broken, the shop entered and a bar of soap stolen. The police have the matters in hand, but so far no arrest has been made.
