FREIGHT CHARGES.
RATES TO NEW PLYMOUTH. EXTRA TO SMALL PORTS. A letter concerning port charges at New Plymouth was brought before the Harbor Board at yesterday’s meeting •Mr. D. J. Hughes said he had received a communication from the Manaia Town Board with reference to freights from London. The board had ordered a consignment of water pipes from a Home firm, instructing shipment to Wellington. On finding that freight from Wellington to Hawera would be £9OO, they cabled stipulating delivery at New Plymouth, only to learn that the freight to New Plymouth was £ 100 more than the charges to Wellington. The chairman (Mr. Newton King) said inward cargo from London to New Plymouth bore an extra charge of 5s per ton, but it was hoped to have this charge taken off within the next six months. In any case, there was a big saving to the Manaia Town Board, compared with the £9OO freight from Wellington. Mr. C. E. Bellringer explained that tne same charge applied to all secondary
ports. , ~ . Mr. C. A. Wilkinson: Anyhow it is a clear object lesson of the value of the port to the people of Manaia. The chairman, in a further explanation regarding charges, said that formerly if a vessel had to discharge at Wellington through rough weather the importer had to pay the t™ nslll P“ e "‘ freight, this being a condition or rue shipment. Now, however the charge had been taken oft. and he hoped to see this charge of. 5s removed before The matter of the big railway freight from Wellington to Hawera in tins instance was the subject of represei tions made to the Minister of Pubhc Works, on his recent v.s.t to South Taranaki, when Mr. Coates promised to look into the matter.
