INGLEWOOD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) April 17. For the election of the Inglewood School Committee (9 members), at the householders’ meeting, on Monday, the 24th instant, the following nominations have been received: Mesdames Clegg, Coldwell, Partridge and Winter, and Messrs. L. Carmine, R. J. Frewin, P. M. Glenie, N. King, T. Knofflock, W. M. Ross and R. Sutton. More interest than usual is being shown this year in the election, and, in fact, in school matters generally the public appear to be awakening to the fact that the human is, like other growths, most easily, permanently influenced, for good or evil, in the early stages of its existence. It is to be hoped that a full and thoroughly representative meeting of householders of the district will assemble on the 24th instant. It certainly is not fair to expect the best of work from a staff of any institution when the persons most concerned show lack of interest in the results of their efforts. This is peculiarly the case with those engaged in training the young, so that for the well-being of the rising generation the adults of the community are investing their time-capital wisely when they spend it on efforts for the advancement of their local schools, and at the same time they hearten the teaching staff by an exhibition of intelligent interest in the welfare of all connected with their educational institutions. Following are the returns of business of the Magistrate’s Court at Inglewood for the quarter ended March 31, 1922: Number of sittings, 3; aggregate amount sued for, £B9B 16s 4d; amount recovered, £732 14s 7d; applications heard, 9; plaintfe entered, 40; distress warrants issued, 3; warrants of committal, 1; summonses served within two miles, 35; beyond two miles, 88; distress warrants executed within two miles, 3; beyond two miles, 4; warrants of committal executed, 3; civil fees paid, £59 13s. Criminal: Persons taken into custody, 10 males; discharged, 4; summarily convicted, 6; fined, 4; orders made, 1; convicted and discharged, 1; criminal, fees paid, £1 8s; fines paid, £5 10s; total, £6 18s. It is safe to say that Inglewood generally, and Inglewood football lovers especially, were gratified by the result of tfie football tournament at W.aitara on Monday, a result which should have a good ’ effect on the football spirit of the whole district, and encourage the local exponents of the good old game to heroic efforts in the coming season. Following are the members of the team selected to play for Inglewood seniors against Eltham, at Eltham, on Saturday next: Bishell, Wtird, Burkhardt, Cheyre, Dean, Cartwright, Huckstep, Taylor, Lumsden, Coutts, Davis, Sutherland, Langland, Wright and Nicholls. Inglewood feels that the honor of its club is in safe keeping with the team, and trusts that, besides upholding the good name of the club for “playing the game”, the team will score a win for thq club’s credit. All preparations for the euchre party and dance on Thursday, the 20th instant, in aid of the soldiers’ memorial fund, are well forward, and a distinct success is anticipated, as the object is universally approved.
