FARM AND DAIRY.
81 GALLONS OF MILK IN ONE WEEK. The British Friesian cow Brookside Colantha, which recently broke the British milk production record for one week supplied 810 i lbs of milk in 7 days as follows:—Monday, January 16, Tuesday, January 17, 1131bs; Wednesday, January IS, 1141bs; Thursday, January 19,’ 119%1b5; Friday, January 20, 113£lbs; Saturday, January 21, 115flbs; Sunday, January 22, 118£lbs; total, 810%lbs-; daily average, 115%1b5. She is in the Hache herd belonging to Sir John Ramsden and Col. Thynne. The fact that the application of scientific methods in farming handsomely ’pays the farmer ha 6 frequently been emphasised and the experience of a Manawatu dairy farmer during the present season gives further point to the statement. The farmer in question recently stated that in spite of the low prices realised for butter-fat early in the season, his milk cheque this year would be almost as large as that of last. He has been testing his herd for some years, and judicious culling has increased the average yield of his cows. Club-root is reported to be playing havoc with rape and turnip in the Manawatu district (states the local Daily Times). A competent man says that the Government has made very little advance in discovering the means whereby this disease may be combated. He says that if stock are fed upon a crop so infected, and in the intervals are grazed upon adjoining pasture, the paddock, if ploughed and cropped with rape or turnips in the following season, will develop club-root. The only remedy he finds is to treat the ground with one white crop, such as oats, wheat, or barley. If the Agricultural Department is dealing with the matter, then comparatively few people know it. The opinion is freely expressed that a less expensive and more effective mean’s of disseminating the results of their investigations concerning -fruit culture and agriculture would be to take the country newspapers into their confidence on the subject.
