DISTRICT NEWS.

NORFOLK ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Thursday last marked for the school a new departure in the way of a horticultural show, which included also a section for adults. A strong committee of ladies and gentlemen had been at work for some time, so that the general organisation ran quite smoothly for a first show. Many fine entries in all classes were to be seen, a special feature being the produce grown by the children from seed supplied at school. A very fine display of sketching, plasticine modelling, and raffia work was exhibited by the Tariki school. Messrs. Johnson and Syme, the agricultural instructors, were in attendance to judge the nature study and produce, and to conduct the cow-judging. During the afternoon. Mr. R. Masters, M.P., formally declared the show to be open, and in a few appropriate remarks complimented the school and district on its enterprise in ewb rking on such an educative functi - .i a show. A few articles on exhibition only attracted very favorable comment:— Mrs. Goy's hand-made lace, Mr. E. Drake's leather work, Miss Elsie Gorney’s crocheted table cloth, Mr. L. Fischer’s and Mr. W. Drake’s observation hives, and the Tariki school work, previously mentioned. In the evening the show was continued.

The following are the results of the competitions:—-Guessing the number of seeds in a pumpkin, Miss C. Marshall; beans in a bottle, Mr. W. Goble; doll’s name (Martha) not correctly guessed by anyone, and the doll was therefore sold; weight of cake (61b 9oz), five persons guessing within loz of correct weight (Mr. H. Mantey, Miss Heal, Mrs. Wag staff, Mrs. Thomas and Mr. Alex Laurence), the cake accordingly being divided amongst the five. A stall for the children was managed by Mrs. Wright, who had a very busy time with pennies as the principal medium of exchange. Soon after 9 p.m. the produce was auctioned by Mr. Partridge, and the floor cleared for a dance. Miss Ella Dombroski provided the music, and Mr. W. Marshall acted as M.G. Items were given by Miss Egarr (songs), Master Jack Wisnewski, and Mr. F. Partridge (recitations), and Mr. Oscroft (songs). The dance concluded just before midnight. The total takings, which are to be devoted to a school tennis court, amount, to nearly £24, out of which about £5 will be required for expenses. Thanks are specially due to Mr. lE. Davis for carting trestles and boards, and to Mr. H. Egarr for providing a cow for the cow-judging. The following donations were received:—Mr. H. Trimble £l, Mrs. E. Davies 5s and a doll for competition, Mr. Wagstaff 56, Mr. W. Kendrick 10s, Mr. W. Marshall 10s. Mr. A. Marshall 10s, Mrs. Wagstaff an iced cake for competition, Mrs. Burgess a knitted jumper.
