WAITARA SPORTS.
SOLDIERS’ AND CIVILIANS’ CLUB. A SUCCESSFUL MEETING. The first annual sports meeting of the North Taranaki Soldiers’ and Civilians’ Club was held on the Gamp Reserve. Waitara, yesterday in favorable weather. The attendance was large and excellent sport was provided, the programme being an ambitious one carried out in business-like fashion. In almost every event there were large entries, the cycling races especially exciting great interest and providing good finishes. An excellent orchestra, comprising instrumentalists from New Plymouth and Waitara, rendered a pleasing programme of music throughout the afternoon, and. the catering was in the capable hands of a committee of ladies. A seven-a-side football tournament was carried out between four
teams and produced keen rivalry, Inglewood finally annexing the honors. The officials were: Judges, Rev. G. H. Gavin, Messrs. A. W. Ogle and L. Birdling; handicapper, Mr. C. A. Burke; starter, Mr. R. Inglewood: Cheinc, Burkett, Davis, Brown, Coutts, Dean and Taylor. In the first round Tukapa met Stratford and were defeated by 10 points (2 converted tries and a force) to nil, and in the second round Inglewood beat Clifton hv to 3. Tn the final Inglewood beat Stratford by 10 points to 6, after a stiring contest.
