COMPLETED TO MATIERE. OPENING CEREMONY PROPOSED. Many years have passed since the first sod was turned in the StratfordMain Trunk railway, but now ft fs expected that the first Public Mterlcs train will wend its way to Matiere on Saturday, April 22 (writes the Auckland Star’s Taumarunui correspondent). The settlers have decided to celebrate the occasion in an appropriate manner, and a large and enthusiastic meeting was held in the Matiere Hall on Wednesday night to consider ways and means. A Railway Celebration Committee was formed with Mr. W. 11. Amos as hon. secretary, and it was agreed to telegraph to the Minister asking if he would proceed from Aria (where he will be on the day in question) to Matiere in order to attend the opening function. It is proposed that the “first tr -n” meet the 10.20 aj.m. passenger train from Taumarunui to Okahukura, conveying passengers through the tunnel to Matiere to attend the opening ceremony. It is also proposed to hold a banquet in the evening.
