WALKING ON WEALTH.

MONEY IN HIS SOCKS. Unconscious of the fact that his long unchanged socks contained the price of many drinks, Harry had sized himself up as eligible for arrest on a charge of vagrancy, and had gone to Sub-Inspector McNamara, with a “Here I am again; lock me up!” Mr. McNamara had obliged him. When he appeared before the Wellington Court | the other day as he had planned, the Sub-Inspector told his story for him. “He came to me at my ’office,” stated the prosecuting officer. “He said: ‘Here I am again; Jock me up. I have no money, I have had nothing to eat, and I slept in a piano case last night. If you don't put me in, I’m going to go over the side.’ “This is a habit of his when he thinks the time has come for him to have a clean up. When. he started to wash himself, out of a sock came £3 he had put away while he was on the booze in Christchurch. He didn’t know he possessed it. He hadn't had his boots or his clothes off for weeks. When he saw the money, he developed a thirst straight away and wanted to be bailed out. We decided to keep him for Your Worship this morning. “In the circumstances,” the SubInspector concluded, “I think it would be quite a proper thing, as he has had a night's rest and a brush up, and possesses £3, to make application to Your Worship for the withdrawal of the charge. I suppose he will be back at the end of the week.” The charge was withdrawn.
