THE RUGBY GAME. PLAY IN TARANAKI. TO-DAY’S MATCHES. Star v. Tukapa, at Western Park. Hawera v. Imlay (W’anganul), at Hawera. SATURDAY, APRIL 22. SENIOR CUP FIXTUBES. A Grade. Tukapa v. Stratford, at New Plymouth. Hawera v. Opunake, at Hawera. Clifton v. Waimate, at Waltara. Patea v. Okaiawa, at Okaiawa. Kaponga, a bye. B Grade. Okato v. Star, at Okato. Old Boys v. Lepperton, at Lepperton. Inglewood v. Eltham, at Eltham. NEWS AND NOTES. Football enthusiasts will be given a taste today of the football that is in store for them this season, when two club matches will be played, viz., Tukapa v. Star, at Western Park, in a benefit match, and Hawera v. Imlay (Wanganui), at Hawera. Both matches will attract attention, and should provide good games. Star has a greatly improved team this season, and expects to fully extend its formidable rival. As both teams have been in active training for several weeks past, they should give a bright exhibition to the finish. South Taranaki is promised a great struggle at Hawera, when the local team, who have been champions of Taranaki for the past couple of seasons, will meet Imlay, the Wanganui champions. Hawera possesses a wellbalanced team, both backs and forwards being capable of good work, and as Imlay are also strong in both departments, the game should be exciting. Next Saturday will see the game start in real earnest in Taranaki, as the cup fixtures commence on that date. Players should take the field in better condition than has been the ease for several years past, and teams should show better combination, as not only have members devoted great attention to training, but the various seven-aside tournaments that have been held have been of great service in the matter of concerted play. The standard of play shown in these tournaments has been splendid, and augurs well for the game during the coming season.
Opunake has added further to its laurels by winning against strong company at Manaia last week; Indeed, the final between Clifton and Opunake is said to have been the best ever witnessed on the ground, being fast and open. Opunake just snatched the victory, but it was a well deserved one, for even though they had the luck of the draw, they have been training hard and have taken up the game seriously. ’The presence of Ifwerson, the New Zealand representative, in the coastal team has strengthened them beyond all knowledge. Cool, clever and resourceful, both as a player and a captain, he has some great material of keen young players to work on, and already a decided improvement is noticeable. This team will be hard to beat, and should nearly achieve the championship honors. . Opunake had bad luck last year In losing a lot of players early in the season through accident, and this year they have already lost one—Duffy, a very promising five-eighths, having been very seriously injured while returning home through a dray colliding with the car in which he was travelling. All footballers will wish this fine young player a speedy recovery, but it is certain he will be unable to take the field again. Clifton put in a good seven. Hickey was playing in great form, as were also Ross, Fryday and Jones, whilst in the ex-Welllngtonlan Tancred, they possess a great forward of the hard, rugged type, and with a fine knowledge of the game. Clifton also promise to play their usual prominent part in the settlement of the championship. Hawera had a strong side, but some of the players appeared to lack condition. Purcell, a new arrival from the East Coast, promises to be a welcome acquisition. With Robertson, Walshe, Wilkinson, and Hughes in good form Hawera should be stronger than ever in the rearguard, whilst their forwards will be all Blrchall and Taylor showed good form for Waimate. This club may be on the weak side this year, as is also Okaiawa, and there is a probability of the two clubs amalgamating. Eltham put in a team, and though the members shaped fairly well, they were beaten by a fairly strong Opunake B team, Opunake also won a tournament at Cape Egmont sports on Wednesday, but the opposition there was weak. Norgate, the ex-Taranaki "hooker,” led a Kaliui Road team. The veteran still shows good form, and will don the Opunake jersey this year. With the added number of teams entered in the competitions this year, there will be a lot of work for the Referees’ Association. However, with the formation of the central division and the acquisition of several new men in the northern division, it is expected that there will be no difficulty in fulfilling all engagements. There is still room for further additions to the ranks of referees. It is pleasing to note that the Referees' Association intends to be strict in enforcing the rule compelling players to take the field in their proper uniforms. Nothing looks worse than to see a team come out arrayed In all the colors of a rainbow, and during the past few seasons there have certainly been some wonderful kaleidoscopic effects. There has, perhaps, been a little excuse during and since the war, owinig to the difficulty In securing the requisite jerseys, but that difficulty has now passed.
