YOUNG WOMAN’S DEATH.
KILLED BY A MOTOR CAR. TWO MEN CHARGED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Gisborne, April 13. The death of a single woman, named Frances Jean McCarthy, 27 years of age. formed the subject for an inquest before Mr. J. S. Barton, coroner. The evidence showed that the deceased and a girl companion were walking home at night on their correct side with bicycles, on March 7, end were run into by a motor ear occupied by two young men and two girts. The coroner returned a verdict that death was the result of injuries received on March 7, when she was run down at night by a motor car which at the time was in the joint control of Sydney Hirst Forbes and Albert Hector Charles. The coroner added that it would seem necessary to rouse a greater sense of responsibility for the protection of the public. The evidence established that the car was insufficiently lighted and the night was fairly dark. The car was travelling fairly fast and its lights threw no beam in front, but threw light on the side only? and that the driver did not see the de* ceased until the car was practically in . contact with her. The coroner felt it hi’ duty as coroner to say that evidence ’ showed a state of things that can ouly be described as shocking, when looked at as the possible standard of conduct by motor car drivers towards other users cf the road. Forbes and Charles were subsequently charged with manslaughter and were remanded for a week. Bail was allowed in each case in £l5O each and sureties of £l5O.
