SIR ROSS SMITH.
Before the details of his proposed ••'world’s flight” could reach New Zealand readers comes the tragic news of the death of Sir Ross Smith and Lieut. Bennett, who was to have accompanied him in that heroic undertaking. It is no exaggeration to say that the news will cast a gloom throughout the Empire. A little over two years ago the English speaking race was thrilled by the intrepid undertaking of a flight from England to Australia which Sir Ross Smith, and the brave men who accompanied him, so successfully accomplished. They then etched their names deeply on the nation’s roll of honor, and now two of them have made the record imperishable by the manner of their death. We hope that in the assurance of an Empire’s sincere sympathy and in the knowledge that Sir Ross Smith and his colleague died in the performance of the preliminary to a task aiming at the greater development of aviation, those near and dear to them will find some consolation for their loss.
