Silver Link has been scratched for the Easter Handicap and Explorer for the Brighton Hurdles. Heavy rain fell for two hours this afternoon, and to-morrow’s prospects are doubtful. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa." ) A.R.C. Easter Handicap to-day. Waimate Plains trots on Monday. The Doncaster will be run at Randwick today. Marqueteur should run well in to-day’s Fellding Cup. Chimera is a quiet tip for Monday’s Great Easter at Riccarton. If Left is saddled up for the Maiden at FeUding no more need be said. Jovial is fancied in Feilding for the Mangaone Stakes, but Voluble may trouble the son of Merry Moment. Fast beginners like Lively Fire and Orchid are sure to carry big money in the shorter hack events at Fellding.
The A.R.C. Easter Handicap bears a very open appearance, and most good judges find it hard to separate Rational, Grotesque and Quest. According to recent Sydney advices Solfanello has receded In favour for the Doncaster Handicap, the present favorites being Dunwll, Braehead, Speciality and Sir Maitland. Beauford’s withdrawal cost the public a lot of money. J. H. Jefferd’s team for Ellerslie will comprise Epitaph, Rapine, Gasbag, Grotesque, and Landbird. Such a speedy qulnette should win big money at the Auckland meeting. Man o' War covered the two miles in connection with the Prince of Wales Handicap it Epsom in 4min. 29 l-ssec., which is probably a grass track record for the Dominion. Although unplaced, Mr. Corrigan’s fine pacer finished within a length of the winner. "Tartar” Julian is a versatile sort of a sportsman. After driving Nita Belle and Hint to victory at Epsom last week, he bustled through to Awapunl and won a hurdle race with No Bother. The latter will probably be heard of again at the Easter meetings. The Walrarapa Easter meeting is set down for to-day and Monday. Printemps should run well in the open distance events, and Backsheesh in the sprints. Zany, Pam, Edendale and Merry Day should be prominent in the minor races. Canterbury acceptances are only fair, though the two principal handicaps have filled well. Mireusonta and Chimera are greatly fancied Easter candidates, and the Autumn Handicao lippears to He between Foo Chow, Bonnie Winkle and Sycorax. Mr. G. D. Greenwood should get more easy money at Riccarton next week, where Gloaming, Farceur and Veil appear to have the best chances. Kllreid may tickle ’em up in the Gimcrack Handicap, six furlongs, at Riccarton, and Little River and Angelo also read well in their engagements. The writer was carefully stowing away a bundle, of notes after Detroit had beaten Volo at Awapunl the other day, when a Taranaki sport, who had had a big punt on Mr. Eaves’ horse, remarked: "Well, you were darned lucky I” "Perhaps,” was the prompt reply, "I'd rather have a few quid on a horse that was lucky to win, than the same amount >n a horse that was unlucky to lose!” He laughed, and still laughing, we "went into liquidation.” A good deal of rain fell at Feilding on Thursday, and at time of writing the prospects of a wet Easter seem a certainty. The track at Feilding gets very sticky, and this may make winners hard to sort out. Amber Tips was the eleventh hour "tip” for the open sprint, but there was • quite a lot of chatter about Inah. Personally, the writer prefers Jovial—with a start in. A Christchuii|ch paper reports that Silver Peak pulled up lame after galloping tills week. This Is a pity, as the southerner was unlucky at Trentham, and was one of the prime fancies for the Great Easter. Roman is reported to be very well at present, and being a quick beginner, he may once more prove his partiality to the sharp turns at Feilding. Amythas was returned to his. owner after racing at Awapunl, and is at present enjoying a holiday in the paddock. Another horse that is reported to have finished racing for the season is Tamatete, who has been troubled with some throat affection, though not touched in the wind, as some scribes state. The sale of trotting horses owned by Mr. J. R. Corrigan should attract a number of enthusiasts to Hawera from all parts of the Dominion to-day. Mr. Corrigan has always gone in for the best, and patrons will have a‘ fine crowd of horses to select from. Particulars of the sale are advertised in the News, and no reasonable offer will be refused. The Sydney Cup comes up for decision on Monday. Sister Olive is a firm favorite, with Harvest King, David, Furious, Nautical, Kashmir and Purser also in demand. First day s running may shed some light on Monday’s twomiler. Sydney scribes report that J. M. Cameron’s team, which included Molyneaux, Tigrinia, Chant Royal and Poet, reached the other side in good order. As the quartette are well forward in condition, we should hear of their success shortly. Epitaph is, fortunately, none the worse for her mishap at Wellington, where she collided with a motor lorry. She will probably be produced in good nick at Ellerslie. J. O'Shea will ride Golden Bubble In the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie. A. Reed will ride Quest. Roy Reed Grotesque,, and H. Goldfinch Loyal Irish.
