The annual meeting of the Stratford Plunket Society was held in the Borough Council chambers yesterday, Mrs. Cuthbert presiding over a large attendance. The annual report, presented by the secretary (Mrs. Finch), was as follows: —The year has been a difficult and important one, difficult because of the financial stringency, which has been felt throughout the world, and important because of the changes which have occurred in the work of the district. Tn September last Miss Patrick, the director of Plunket nursing, visited Stratford and gave a very instructive and interesting address on the rearing of babies and the difficulties that had been overcome when founding a Karitane Hospital in London. As some dissatisfaction was shown by the Inglewood branch Miss Patrick met the executive here and a discussion followed as to whether the work was progressing as satisfactorily as in other

centres. No decision was made until Dr. Truby King came on December 12

and met the executive, who decided that if a change of nurses were made it would probably result in fresh interest being manifested in the work. In the meantime, after due notification, Inglewood became a branch of New Plymouth. Nurse McLean resigned at the end of December, and Nuree Castles from New . Plymouth visited Stratford one day weekly for five weeks. Nurse Ewart was permanently appointed and commenced her duties on February 4. It hae been recently decided that the Plunket rooms be open every afternoon, wfth the exception of Thursday, from 1.30 to 4 p.m. At the beginning of last year there were about 80 babies on the books. New babies: Nurse McLean 54. Nurse Castles 3, Nurse Ewart 23; total. 80 new babies for the year. For the pant financial year we have raised £lOO 2s 9d, £74 6s 5d being the result of street days, garden fete and baby show, the balance, £25 16s 4d, being raised by public subscriptions. To make clear to new members the financial arrangements of the society, we must raise £lOO a year, which the Government subsidises to pay the nurse’s salary. Furthermore, another £5O must be raised for working expenses, rent, light, heating, insurances and some charity cases. Thanks are due to the president and committee for their work and assistance during the year, and also to the public, who have responded to the call for funds which enabled ns to carry on the very necessary work of “Helping the mothers and saving the babies.” The balance-sheet, showed receipts totalling £356 4s Id, the balance in bank and in hand at the end of the year being £3B 5s fid. The society’s assets were shown at £255 10s, liabilities being nil.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Election of Officers. The election of officers resulted: President, Dr. Doris Gordon: vicepresidents, Mesdames Hine, Marfell, McMillan, Masters, Steven.
