TAHORA-TATU TELEPHONE.
DEPARTMENT’S ATTITUDE. Recently the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce renewed its representations to the Post a-nd Telegraph Department to have the telephone line linked up between Tahora and T&tu, pointing out that there was not dow a lack of material, whieh heretofore had been given as the reason for not undertaking the work. The Chamber has now received the following reply from the secretary (Mr. R. B. Morris): In reference to your letter of the 31st ultimo, renewing the application for the erection of a telephone line between Tahora and Tatu, I beg to inform you that the position has not altered materially since I wrote on Jday 30, 1921. You will observe, on reference to that letter, that a considerable expenditure I would be involved in providing the required circuit, and that there are many more important and. urgent works to be done in other parts of the Dominion. Jn the circumstances, it ie regretted that the work cannot be authorised at present. The president of the Chapiber has replied as follows: I have yours of the Sth instant, and regret very much that you cannot see your way to authorise the construction of the telephone line between Tahora and Tatu. This is a work of the first importance to this province, since it links up the back country with the towns. My Oil amber is aware that tne cost would be appreciable, but feels that the district has been neglected too long already in connection with this matter. Possibly no other district is so handicapped in respect to direct telephone communication as our back country, and my Chamber trusts that you wUI see your way to do justice to our back settlers in the immediate future.
