The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated April 8, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London : BUTTER. The extent of the recent rapid increase in value, although only partially reflected in retail prices, has resulted in limitation of consuming demand, and buyers are therefore holding off. Danish is in larger supply owing to weakening Continental trade, and is quoted to-day at 176 s to 180 s per cwt. f.o.b. Supplies of English are more plentiful and selling in country markets at from Is 2d to Is 4d per lb. The result is that prices are much easier, and tendency is downward. New Zealand to-day is selling at 180 s per cwt., and market is slow. Official quotations are:— New Zealand.—April 8,180 s to 188 s per cwt. (Is 7%d to Is B%d per lb.), exceptional 190 s per cwt. (Is B%d per lb.) ; April 1, 188 s to 195 s per cwt. (is B%d to Is 9d per lb.) ; March 25, 176 s to 180 s per cwt. (is 6%d to is 7»4d per lb.). Danish. —April 8,186 s to 198 s per cwt. (Is 8d to Is 9%d per lb.) ; April 1,202 s to 215 s per cwt. (Is 9%d to Is lid per lb.) ; March 25, 190 s to 196 s per cwt. (Is B%d to Is 9d per lb.). CHEESE. Market is easier, with only fair demand. Official quotations are:— Canadian.—April 8: Colored, 98s to 104 s per cwt, (10%d to ll%d per lb.). White, 94s to 102 s per cwt. (lOd to lid per lb.). April 1: Colored, 94s to 104 s per cwt. (lOd to 11*4d Per lb.). White, 90s to 102 s per cwt. (9%d to lid per lb.). March 25: Colored 96s to 104 s per cwt. (10&d to ll&d per lb.). White, 90s to 102 s per cwt. (9%d to lid per lb.). New Zealand. —April 8: Colored, 94s to 98s per cwt. (lOd to 10%d per lb.). White, 90s to 92s per cwt. (9%d per lb.). April 1: Colored, 98s to 109 s per ewt. (10%d to 10%d per lb.). White, 95s to 90s per cwt. (10%d per lb.). March 25: Colored, 94s per cwt. (lOd per lb.). White, 92s To 94s per cwt. (9%d to lOd per lb.). Later reports show further decline in New Zealand: Colored, 92s to 94s per cwt. (9%d to lOd per lb.) ; white. 88s to 90s per cwt. (9*4d to 93<d per lb.). Estimated stock of New Zealand and Australian cheese in London, Liverpool, and Bristol on April 1 was 74,350 crates; Canadian and U.S.A., 43,500 boxes.
