DISTRICT NEWS.
ARAWHATA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Arawhata school picnic was held on the beach on March 24. There was a fair attendance, Jupiter Piuvius being one of the uninvited guests. Tents and motor cars proved to be havens of refuge indeed, in the intervals of rain. Despite the showery weather the kiddies seemed to enjoy thmslves, especially the racing on the beach. In the first race, the winners were Miss Aletha Griffiths and A. Williamson. In the second race Miss Irene Briscoe was champion. Miss Elsie Markham runnerup. The three-legged race caused some excitement, the honors of the day belonging to Misses Elsie Markham and. Kathleen Griffiths.
Meanwhile, the cheery news went its rounds that the “billy” was boiling. Those who had charge of the commissariat department came .to light, and all and sundry sat down on the grass to replenish the waste tissue. Fishing has been the order of the day, or rather the night lately. Messrs. Wilson, Vickey and Williams have been seen wending their way homewards armed with schnapper, kawhai, and heiTing.

Mr. Curd took the children and some of their parents to Ngaere Gardens in the large motor lor- ' ry, and the day being fine a very pleaI sant outing was spent. No doubt the Ngaere Gardens is an ideal place for such a picnic. The sports committee has been revived. A meeting was held on Thursday night and it was decided to hold the sports on May 6. A good programme, chiefly of chopping and sawing, was drawn up, and everything will be done to give the public a real good day’s outing.
Our champion chopper. Mr. C. Volzke, recently married Miss Taylor. We all wish them the best of luck.
I regret to report the death of Mrs. Neustrowski, who died very suddenly. She had only been ill a few hours. The late Mrs. Neustrowski was very highly respected. She was always willing to assist in anything that benefited the district. Our sympathy goes out to Mr. Neustrowski and the eleven children who are left to mourn their
I News has just come to hand of the I death of Mr. Jack Crofsky, of Pihama, i who was at one time a resident of this road. He died after a. very short illness. He was, visiting us just a few days ago, and his death came as a "rent shock to everybody that knew him. Our school teacher, Mr. Gilbert, took sonm 17 children for a day in the bush on Saturday. It is very pleasing for the parents to see he takes so much interest, and being a young and good teacher, I hope the parents will do all in their power to assist him in his work by sending their children to school regularly.
