THE DREAD OF WINTER.
AND UNEMPLOYMENT. ANXIETY IN CHRISTCHURCH. Christchurch, April 10. The matter of unemployment in the city during the coming winter was mentioned at the City Council meeting 'to-night.
Councillor Hunter said that considerable unemployment already existed, and the position was likely to become worse. He moved that the Government be asked to state at once what steps it intends to take to deal with unemployment. Councillor McKellar sa?a the council should endeavor to manage their own affairs, and not rush co the Government for help. The electricity department had work in hand which could be started very shortly now, and which would employ a considerable number of men during the winter months.
Councillors Andrews said the reserves committee were about to start on the planting of another 90 acres at Bottle Lake.
The Mayor said the new municipal buildings and the memorial bridge also would provide work. Councillor Hunter said the Government should be urged to put in hand its works in the country, so that men without dependents might go out to the country and so relieve the position in the city for the benefit of married mein with families.
Councillor Flesher suggested that the Governmnt be asked to subsidise what was raised locally for the benefit of unemployed. 'Che Mayor said an application on these lines would be made. Councillor Hunter’s motion was car-
