ADVENTURES IN FINANCE.

E. T. HOOLEY’S CAREER. £5,000,000 WORTH OF LAND. London, March 23. Ernest Terah Hooley, who is charged, with five others, with conspiracy to defraud in connection with the sale of the Jubilee Cotton Mill, burst into tears and sobbed in the witness-box at the Old Bailey. He narrated his adventures in finance, and told how he had promoted many big companies, including Dunlop’s, Schweppes, the Bovril Company, and the Raleigh and Swift cycle companies. Becoming bankrupt through speculations in cycle shares, he afterwards speculated in land. He bought £5,000,000 worth for cutting up, but the slump of 1912 made him bankrupt again. Hooley said that he accepted full responsibility for the actions of his secretary, Brakspear, one of his co-defendants in connection with the sale of the Jubilee Mill.
