B- Neale presiding over a good attendance. Mr. Neale, on behalf of the meeting, extended to Mr. W. E. Hills, Bird Road’s new representative, a hearty welcome. Mr. Neale also voiced the meeting's appreciation of Mr. Hill’s past work for the church and Sunday school at Bird Road. The Sunday school returns were very satisfactory, and evidenced faithful and consistent work by teachers and scholars in that department. The membership returns reveal a slight decrease through death and removal- In this connection mention was made of the loss sustained by the church through the death of two members of’choice Christian character, Mrs. R. Wellington and Mrs. Osborne. A vote of deepest sympathy with the two families concerned was passed in silence. The balance-sheet was presented by Mr. Neale in the absence of Mr. J. W. Boon, circuit steward. During the quarter a special effort was made with a view to winding up the great forward movement initiated last year. It was reported that while the response to that appeal was very gratifying indeed, there still remains a debit which it is hoped will be wiped out during the current quarter. The following resolution was carried: "That we express our profound gratitude to God for the sacrificial giving of members, adherents and friends of the Methodist Church in this district, and the wholehearted support of all who helped toward the splendid achievements of the past year” At the close of the meeting refreshments were handed round by Mrs. Neale and her helpers, for which Mr. G. Smith, of Midhirst, on behalf of the meeting, returned thanks. DEATH OF A VETERAN. There died at his residence, Portia Street, this morning, a veteran of the Maori War, in the person of Mr. Lambton W. F. Carter, who had reached the age of 74. He was born in Ferozepore, East Indies, being the son of an old Indian Army officer, Captain J. C. Lambton Carter, 44th Regiment of Foot, and later Second Superintendent of Hawke’s Bay, and grandson of the late Colonel William Carter. Deceased was a member of the New Zealand Militia of Petane, Napier, in 1869, which was the year of the Mohaka Massacre- He volunteered, and was one of about thirty men who arrived at the scene of the Mohaka Massacre about twenty-four hours after it had occurred. He counted fifty dead friendly Maoris, and also three white children, who had been bay ©netted, while their father and mother, named Lavin, lay dead on the edge of a cliff. When the main body of the Militia arrived they went up the Mohaka River for about twelve miles, but did not see any Hau Haus. Deceased acted as a scout for about a fortnight, and had many experiences, with others carrying his life in his hands. Mr. Carter came to New Zealand in 1851, and has lived in Stratford for eighteen years. The funeral will leave his late residence on Monday afternoon at two o’clock, for the Kopuatama Cemetery.
