The weather was fine, but overcast, for the opening day of the Manawatu Racing Club's autumn meeting, and, considering the rain that had fallen previously, the track was in very fair order, as the times registered prove. The attendance was small, Thursday being a bad day for townsfolk throughout Manawatu and Rangitikei, and speculation was poor, considering the good fields and superb totaUsator facilities, the returns dropping from £42,097 to £25,090. Weather conditions promise '.o be better to-day, and the attendance and tote figures should both be considerably augmented. Thursday was a bad day for favorites. Dissertation being the only one to score, though Good Mark, No Bother, Volo and Peneus returned second dividends—mostly on the losing side. Racing was full of surprises and indifferent horsemanship, and much blocking and chopping about, especially at the home turn, resulted in races being won bv horses that were lucky, to say the least of it. The features—or, one might say, the sensations—of the day were the defeats of Amythas, Volo and Peneus, all of which were unfortunate. Amythas and Volo were both blocked when making their runs, and Peneus got the worst of a straggling start, of which the winner (The Dunce) got the best. Finishes were dose in all events, reflecting credit on the handicapper, Mr. J. E. Henrys. Taranaki horses performed nobly, and anyone who stuck to them during the day must have come out a good winner. Marqueteur got away with the Awapunl Gold Cup, paying a nice twofigure dividend; The Dunce returned a limit “price” in the Sires’ Produce Stakes; and Irapuka sent his backers home rejoicing with a fine dividend.
Racing opened with the Autumn Plate, Haligan being the only withdrawal, leaving nine runners, of which Good Mark, Yolande and Martulla were best backed. Peep o’ Day and Yolande were the early leaders, but Bonnie Nurse passed them on the home bend, and lasted long enough to beat the fast-finishing favorite, with Martulla and Yolande next. All started In the Karate Hurdles, the Aucklander No Bother being a warm favorite, with Whizz Bang, Maniahera and Wamba next in demand. Wamba was first away, and ~never relinquished the lead, but he had had quite enough of it when the judge’s box was reached, where No Bother had run him to a neck. Old Gold was a fair third, and Goldscene fourth. No Bother looks like winning next time out. Martial Dawn, Strategy and Little River had the pen put through their names In the Prince of Wales Handicap, leaving seven runners, of which Volo was an even-money favorite, followed by Askari, Detroit and Paoanui. This was the race of the day. From an even “break”, American Beauty led Woden, Paoanul and Askari, with Volo and Bonnetter in the rear. Woden headed American Beauty going along the back, and Detroit ran through to third. The field bunched at the home turn, with Paoanui, Woden and Detroit prominent, and Volo coming fast. Detroit wore the leaders down, but had to be kept going to beat Volo, who came with a fine run, after being blocked. Most people thought Volo was unlucky to lose, and possibly it was so, but Detroit also finished with great determination, and it would have been a close thing whichever way the luck swung. Detroit, who has been sprinting well lately, should run well In the seven furlongs race to-day, and Volo (if started) will be in the picture at the finish of the Longburn Handicap. Mountain Lion, Epitaph, Moorland and Menthe dropped out of the Sires’ Produce Stakes, and of the eight runners Peneus was made a good favorite, with King’s Trumpeter, Zany and the bracketed pair. Highland and Killashandra, next in favor. Ares and The Dunce got the best of a poor send-off, and the latter, who was ridden by Ashley Reed, made every post a winner. Peneus made up a lot of ground in the run to the post, but the Hawera gelding held a length’s advantage at the finish. King’s Trumpeter was a good third, and Zany fourth.
The Woodhey Handicap attracted nineteen runners, Danger Zone, Moonstruck, Warpath, Te Kurt and Will Prosper being the only absentees. Red Hind, who had won twice re■.•cntly, was a warm favorite, and Scotch Mixture, Crossfire (A. Reed), Orchid and Yankee Dan were best backed of the others. Crossfire began smartly, and at the home bend had Scotch Mixture, Pam, Orchid and Yankee Dan as her closest attendants. Crossfire then retired, and the result looked very open. Orchid dropped out Inside the distance, and Scotch Mixture just scrambled home by a head from Pam, with Yankee Don and Ambitious next. Both horses returned fine dividends. Red Hind appeared to be making heavy going of it all the way, and was shut in on the rails at the bend coming into the straight. Orchid, by Absurd—Gladloie, showed a lot of speed, and should be kept in mind. Gasbag and Kick Off did not sport silk In the Awapunl Gold Cup, and Amythas was backed as if it was ali over. Five lined up, and Thespian at once took the lead, followed by Cieasanta, Amythas, Marqueteur and Trespass, Thsspiaa was still fiattarla* his
porters as they came into the straight, with Amythas on the rails in third position. Marqueteur and Trespass then came fast on the outside, and fought out a great finish, Marqueteur winning by a long head. Amythas, who did not get Clear until too late, finished fast a length further back, with Thespian and Cieasanta both handy. The result was a complete boll-over, Marqueteur only being fourth in order of favoritism. Mr. Frank Besley’s horse has raced consistently lately, and his win was well received.
Angelo, La Paloma, Island, Danil off, Antler and Pantier were withdrawn from the Linton Handicap, fourteen facing the starter. Dissertation was a very solidly backed favorite, but there was also money for Spook, Redlogue and ■Kilreld. Dissertation at once hit the front, but was steadied, and Petunia and Kilreid were prominent. Dissertation regained his lead in the straight, and just got home from All Cerise and Pleasure, with Kilreld fourth. The last-named may be better suited by the shorter distance to-day.
The scratching pen accounted for Still Sea and Callaghan in the Telegraph Handicap, leaving thirten runners. Mustard Pot was favorite, with Jovial, Irapuka, Triboulet and Birkie next in demand. Irapuka jumped out smartly, and quickly gained a big break on the field, which he maintained to the finish, running in an easy winner by three lengths from Chimera, with Jovial a fair third, and ■Martian Miss fourth. It wasn’t a race at aUt C.J.C. EASTER MEETING. Christchurch, April 7. Gasbag was scratched for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps at IL2O a.m. to-day. RACING IN ENGLAND. DERBY FAVORITE BEATEN. Reecived April 7, 8.35 p.m. London, April 6. Lord Astar’s colt Tamar, who, despite not having any two-year-old form to his credit, was recently Installed favorite for the Derby, will be ridden by F. Bullock. He was a warm favorite to-day out of a record field for the Craven Stakes at Newmarket, but Collaborator, which has not been entered for the three-year-old classics, beat him easily by five lengths. BETTING-BY-CHEQUE BILL. Received April 7, 8.45 p.m. London, April 6. Lord Muir McKenzie, in the House of Lords, reintroduced his Betting-By-Cheque Bill.
