SHOOTING FATALITY.
PETONE YOUTH KILLED. The pleasures of a camping-out expedition by a number of Petone youths were tragically marred on Tuesday afternoon when one of their number, Lennox Clarke, aged eighteen years, an apprentice, whose parents reside at Nelson Street, Petone, was accidentally shot, with fatal results, by a companion named Douglas Reid, aged about 20 years. Particulars obtainable were somewhat meagre, but it appears that four or five youths left Petone a few days ago to enjoy wild pig and goat shooting beyond Orongorongo. They were camping at Mukumuku, about five or six miles past Mr. Eric Riddiford’s sheep station, at Orongorongo. About 3 p.m. on Tuesday, when hunting, Reid was on the point of firing when Clarke unexpectedly came out from behind cover and received the charge from Reid’s gun. Clarke fell to the ground and expired Almost immediately.
