THE P.P.A. "ASSES.”
(To the Editor.) Sir,—I read with some surprise in your issue of yesterday’s -paper, the letter of John Diggins, in which he refers to the P.P.A. as “assea.” Still 1 expect there are many of us who would rather be classed as a Protestant “ass” than a Catholic bigot. In his remarks re atrocities in Ireland, English soldiers have never murdered ex-soldiers and badly wounded at that, and, policemen in their beds in cold blood. If John Diggins will have read his “History of the Nations” he would will see that in every country where the Catholics have got too strong there has been trouble, and when he alludes to Catholics fighting for their rights, does he want to turn peaceful and lovely New Zealand into a field of blood-shed I have lived and travelled in Catholic countries, and seen how they are a people mistrusted and disliked. Two years ago I was told by a loyal Protestant Irishman coming out to New Zealand that Sinn Fein was being preached from the pulpits, and the priests were telling the men to each account for so many murders a month. Leave the Irish alone, and they will tight amongst themselves. Truly their motto is: “If there’s a fight I’m agin it.” I am with the ex-soldier who wrote to your paper last week saying R.C. priests should not be allowed to land here.—l am, etc., MABEL JEFFRIES. Bell Block, April 5. (Late of London.)
