BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night’. Present: The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson). Crs. J. Kibby, W. Rumball. T. N. Blackball, E. Dingle, R. L. Parkin, J. Brown, R. A. Large, ana V. Griffiths. In reply to Cr. Parkin, the engineer (Mr. W. H. Cook) said ly; thought thework of taking the permanent levels of the borough (which is being undertaken by a private firm), was about half completed. The recommendation of the Peace Celebrations Committee that moneys in hand amounting to £53 be paid over to the Victoria League, to be expended on the upkeep of the soldiers’ plot in the cemetery was approved. Steps are to be taken to obtain the preliminary consent of the Government for the raising of a special loan or £lOOO to be expended on streets in the Frankleigh Park district, and to be covered by a rate over special rating 'area. The attention of the Railway Depattmeht is to be drawn to the state of the crossing at the entrance to the railway yards in the Gill Street extension, with the request that it be put in order. It was decided that the council make an inspection of certain localities at Westown in respect to which representations have been made for street works of various kinds. The date of the visit was tentatively fixed for Thursday, the 20th isst. The Wellington City Council wrote reviewing representations made to the Minister of Public Works regarding the provisions of the Public Works Act, under which local bodies may be required to contribute towards the cost of roads and bridges constructed by adjoining | local authorities. The council was of 'opinion that the Act operated unfairly, and had asked that it be struck tout or that commissioners appointed to arbitrate should be a judge of the Supreme Court.—The council decided to I support the repeal of the Act. I A report received from the engineer I stated that serious damage had been I sustained bv one of the council's lorries. While'it was engaged at the gaol .nit in connection with the cartage of inptal another of the council’s lorries arrived, and backed into the first ma<chine, damaging the radiator beyond ♦repair. He estimated the cost of re- ■ pairs at from £65 to £7O.
